Understanding Ayurveda

Ten questions the physicians are asked most.

These answers are the clinic's own. They are the clearest short account of how Ayurveda reasons about illness that we could put in front of you — so they lead this page rather than hiding at the bottom of it.

First, the three

Everything below rests on the doshas.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha — the three vital humours. Disease is what happens when their balance is lost. Which one has risen determines which therapy is even considered.

  • वात

    Vata

    Movement

Governs motion — breath, circulation, nerve impulse, elimination. When it rises: pain, stiffness, dryness, irregularity.

  • पित्त

    Pitta

    Transformation

Governs digestion and metabolism, and the processing of everything taken in. When it rises: heat, inflammation, acidity, bleeding.

  • कफ

    Kapha

    Structure

Governs cohesion, lubrication and mass. When it rises: heaviness, congestion, phlegm, sluggishness.

  1. 01 Why did I get this disease?

Any disease is caused in the body as a result of imbalance of the three doshas — the vital humours Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

According to Ayurveda any disease manifests because of Pragna aparadha, or Parinama, or Asatmendriyartha samyoga.

    Pragna aparadha
Intentionally doing an action that leads to a disease. A person who knows that curd increases phlegm, but consumes excess curd in the wrong season, and develops wheezing.
    Parinama
Natural changes in the season or the day increase or decrease the doshas, outside one’s control. Those with allergic rhinitis sneeze more in the morning, when moisture in the environment is higher and kapha rises in the body. Chicken pox and urticaria rise at the beginning of Varsha ritu, when pitta increases.
    Asatmendriyartha samyoga
Unsuitable interactions between the sense organs and their objects. Staring at a screen for long periods can cause vision trouble; smelling drugs can cause addiction.
  2. 02 Why should I be treated through Ayurveda?

Ayurveda offers natural, safe, effective, quick and long-lasting cure.

  3. 03 Why Sreehareeyam Ayurveda?

  4. 04 How does Sreehareeyam manage disease?

Sreehareeyam strictly adheres to Ayurvedic principles. We administer either Sodhana — Panchakarma, the eliminative therapies — or Samana, pacifying remedies.

  5. 05 What is meant by Sodhana or Panchakarma?

Five different treatments meant to cleanse and purify the body of increased or vitiated doshas.

    Vamana
    Supervised, medically induced emesis
    Virecana
    Supervised, medically induced purgation
    Vasti
    Supervised medicated enemas
    Nasya
Supervised medicated errhines and nasal drops
    Rakta mokshana
    Controlled removal of diseased blood
  6. 06 What are the benefits of undergoing Panchakarma?

The severity of the disease, or the disease itself as observed in practice, comes down.

Once a disease is cured by Panchakarma it does not recur for the next few years.

Even if the condition returns, its severity is less than in previous episodes.

  7. 07 Do all diseases require all five Panchakarma procedures?

No. In each disease only specific doshas increase, so all five treatments are not required for everyone. Every Panchakarma procedure is specific to a dosha.

  8. 08 What is meant by Samana, or palliative medicine?

Ayurvedic medicines are administered to treat the specific condition. This is done when the patient does not have time to undergo Panchakarma, and for minor conditions that do not require it.

  9. 09 How long does Samana treatment take?

It depends on the condition and its severity. Some conditions can be treated with a single course of medicine; some may take a year or more.

  10. 10 Do I have to follow dietary restrictions?

Yes. Wrong eating is one of the major nidana — causes — of disease according to Ayurveda.

Dietary modification is advised for two purposes: to enhance the efficacy of the medicines and prevent their side effects, and to remove the causative factor of the disease. Without it, neither purpose is achieved.
